Public chargers in the UK come in four speeds, as the government names them: standard (3 to under 8 kW), standard plus (8 to under 50 kW), rapid (50 to under 150 kW) and ultra-rapid (150 kW and over).
At home, a 7 kW wallbox suits most people. On a long trip, the RAC says a rapid charger typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, and an ultra-rapid one 15 to 30 minutes.
The UK had 121,171 public chargers on 1 July 2026, 28,887 of them rapid or faster (Department for Transport).
